A Box Cushion is a cushion with a flat top, flat bottom and a panel of material (i.e. a gusset) that connects the top and bottom panels with each other.
Choose the right inner for your Box Cushion
Generally, depending on the quality of the cushion, box cushions are filled with either low or high density solid foam. We offer our clients a choice between High Density Solid Foam or Unicurl. We also offer Fire retardant foam on request. The foam we supply is locally produced in Cape Town by Strandfoam. In addition, all Box Cushions Custom-made by Fabricsuperstore are covered in dacron which is sewn together in a sleeve. This is to ensure a snug fit for the cushion cover with no slippage.
A foam inner provides great support, adds firmness to a box cushion & aesthetically – a crisp and clean look. Foam is also the more popular choice of inner when it comes to box cushions. If you want a softer cushion with a plump look and feel opt for a unicurl inner. We also offer feather inners on request. Feather inners also give your box cushion a plump look and feel with added softness. However, a feather cushion will flatten and mould to your shape when you sit on it, whereas a unicurl or foam cushion will bounce back thus holding its shape. To keep your feather filled cushions plump and looking great you will have to fluff them up regularly.
Choose the right finish for your box cushion
Once you’ve chosen your box cushion inner the next step is to decide what cushion finish you would like. You have a choice between piping or no-piping.
Piping is a fabric-covered trim along the seams of a cushion.
Clients with a modern, no-frills home aesthetic generally prefer no-piping. On the other hand, a lot of clients prefer piping because it rounds a cushion off nicely and adds a touch of sophistication.
Generally, the cushion piping is done in the same fabric the client selected for the cushion cover (self-piping). We do offer contrast piping on request. With contrast piping you select a different fabric for the piping and the cushion cover.
